I had a great experience with Kramer Law and would absolutely recommend them. Viviana was my attorney, and she was professional, knowledgeable, and made sure my case was handled well from start to finish. I especially want to recognize Annabel, her assistant. She was amazing throughout the entire process and did so much to help me. She was always responsive, kept me updated, answered my questions, and made sure I knew what was going on with my case. She truly went above and beyond and made what could have been a stressful experience so much easier.

She is helping me all the way to my recovery and she is on the top of my case, keeping me updated in what's going on every moment when something new is comming up. Thank you Sarai.

Kramer Law Group truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment I contacted them, I felt like more than just a case number—they genuinely cared about me and my situation. Their team is knowledgeable, responsive, and committed to delivering real results. They took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure I understood each step of the process, which gave me so much peace of mind. What really stood out to me was how dedicated they are—not just to their clients, but also to their community. I recently attended a men’s mental health seminar at their office, and it was clear that they foster a positive, supportive environment. You can feel it in how they treat people—with respect, compassion, and a sincere desire to help. If you’re looking for a law firm that will fight for you and actually get results, look no further than Kramer Law Group. They go to bat for their clients, and they don’t give up. I’m incredibly grateful for their help and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing legal support.

It's a great firm that helps the community with cases of falls, slips, work and car accidents, dog bites, and sexual assault. It also contributes to the community with its twice-monthly workshops to educate the community on important topics. These workshops are planned by Karina and Corina, along with attorney Kramer, who provide us with snacks and a nice environment to connect with other people and services. Thank you all very much for your contributions.

Jenny Hoppie, J.D. was great to work with. She was kind, explained things thoroughly in a way that I could understand (not the legal jargon that goes straight over my head) From the time that I spoke with her to the time that we had the settled she did all of the leg work and went above and beyond even though my case wasn’t a monster big paying type of case. I appreciated her diligence, and professionalism in still treating my case as important. I have had previous experience where it seemed like because it was a smaller injury case, the attorneys were not as attentive or helpful. Jenny stayed with it and took care of all of the things and is still at this point even pursuing the interest on the payment from the insurance company! Would recommend Jenny Hoppie 10/10 to handle your case with care and utmost quality!

Personal Injury Lawyer Serving All of Utah

You were injured in Utah and somebody else caused it. Within days, sometimes within hours, an adjuster calls asking for a recorded statement and offering to make the whole thing go away. That call is not customer service. It is the first move in a claim the insurer has already started building against you. Ron Kramer built his practice around these personal injury cases. Ron has represented injured people since 1997 and founded Kramer Injury Law in 2004. He is licensed to practice in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada.

When Ron started handling commercial trucking cases, he decided he would not rely on an expert to tell him what a logbook meant. He enrolled in commercial driving school, earned a Commercial Driver’s License, and learned to read hours-of-service records, electronic logging data, and pre-trip inspection reports the way a fleet safety director reads them. A trucking company’s version of events now gets tested against its own paperwork inside the first weeks of a case, not after a year of discovery.

We take over the adjusters, the investigation, the medical liens, and the negotiations. You focus on treatment.

Call (801) 601-1229 for a free consultation, or visit us at 8132 S Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT 84088. If you cannot travel, we come to your home or your hospital room.

Personal Injury Cases We Handle Across Utah

Kramer Injury Law is a plaintiffs’ practice. We do not defend insurance companies and never have.

We also handle civil sexual abuse claims against individuals and the institutions that enabled them, plus construction accident and workplace injury claims brought as third-party negligence actions alongside workers’ compensation.

Not sure which category fits your situation? That is what the free consultation is for. See all practice areas.

What to Do After a Personal Injury in Utah

Four decisions you make in the first week shape what your personal injury claim is worth a year from now.

Decline the recorded statement

Utah adjusters ask for one early because the questions are built to lock in a version of events before you know how badly you are hurt. You are required to cooperate with your own insurer. You owe the at-fault driver’s carrier nothing. Talk to a Utah injury lawyer before you agree to be recorded.

See a doctor now, even if you feel fine

Adrenaline masks soft tissue and head injuries for days. A gap between the crash date and your first medical visit is the single most common argument insurers use to discount a Utah injury claim.

Do not deposit the first check.

It arrives before anyone knows your treatment costs, and cashing it usually closes the claim for good.

Open your PIP claim immediately

Utah is a no-fault state. Your own policy owes benefits regardless of who caused the crash, and those benefits expire on their own schedule.

Photograph the scene and your visible injuries. Get names and phone numbers from witnesses before they scatter. Ask for the crash report number from the responding Utah Highway Patrol trooper or local officer.

How Utah's No-Fault System Works

Utah is one of a dozen no-fault states, and the rule catches most people by surprise. Your own auto policy pays first, and you cannot sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering until your injuries clear a statutory threshold.

Your PIP benefits under Utah Code § 31A-22-307

Every Utah auto policy carries Personal Injury Protection. PIP pays whether or not the crash was your fault.

Benefit What Utah law requires
Medical expenses At least $3,000 per person for medical, surgical, X-ray, dental, rehabilitation, ambulance, hospital, and nursing services. Many policies carry more.
Lost income The lesser of $250 per week or 85% of lost gross income and earning capacity, for up to 52 consecutive weeks. Not payable for the first three days of disability unless the disability runs longer than two weeks.
Household services Up to $20 per day for a maximum of 365 days, roughly $600 a month, so a family member can be paid to help with cleaning, cooking, and errands while you heal.
Funeral expenses Up to $1,500.
Death benefit $3,000 payable to the heirs, regardless of fault.

Household services money is separate from your eventual settlement, and most Utah drivers never claim a dollar of it because nobody tells them it exists. Our staff files that paperwork for you.

Utah also allows PIP stacking when you are covered under more than one policy.

Utah's tort threshold under Utah Code § 31A-22-309

Before you can pursue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering and the rest of your general damages, your injuries have to meet one of these conditions:

Threshold condition Applies when
Medical expenses over $3,000 Your crash-related bills exceed the statutory floor
Bone fracture Any documented break
Permanent disability or impairment Supported by objective medical findings
Permanent disfigurement Scarring and comparable lasting damage
Dismemberment Loss of a limb or digit
Death Wrongful death claim brought by surviving family

Uninsured motorist claims are exempt from the threshold. So are injuries that did not arise from a motor vehicle, which means slip and fall claims, dog bites, and premises cases never touch this analysis at all.

Utah Statutes of Limitations

The Utah statute of limitations for personal injury is four years from the date of the injury. Five other deadlines sit underneath that one, and three of them are shorter.

Miss one and the strongest case in the state becomes worthless. Utah courts do not grant extensions for a missed filing deadline.

Claim type Deadline Authority
Most personal injury claims 4 years from the injury Utah Code § 78B-2-307
Wrongful death 2 years from the date of death Utah Code § 78B-2-304
Medical malpractice 2 years from discovery, 4-year outside limit Utah Code § 78B-3-404
Product liability 2 years from discovery Utah Code § 78B-6-706
Property damage only 3 years Utah Code § 78B-2-305
Claims against a government entity Notice of claim within 1 year, then suit within 1 year of denial Utah Code §§ 63G-7-402, 63G-7-403

Two rules deserve more attention than they usually get.

Government claims run on a one-year clock, not four

If a UTA bus, a city vehicle, a school district employee, a UDOT contractor, or any public employee was involved, you have one year to serve a written notice of claim under the Utah Governmental Immunity Act. Serving it late ends the case before it begins. That deadline catches people who assumed they had four years.

Injured minors get the clock paused

Under Utah Code § 78B-2-108, the limitations period for a child generally does not begin running until the child turns 18. Medical malpractice and government claims carry their own rules, so a parent should never assume the standard tolling applies.

How Utah Fault Rules Affect Your Recovery

Modified comparative fault, 50 percent bar. Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818, you recover nothing if you are found 50 percent or more responsible for your own injuries. Below that line, your award drops by your percentage of fault. Found 20 percent responsible on a $100,000 verdict and you take home $80,000.

That rule is the reason adjusters work so hard to pin a share of blame on you during the first recorded statement. Every percentage point they assign to you is money off the top.

Damages are allocated, not shared. Utah abolished joint and several liability. Under Utah Code § 78B-5-820, each defendant pays only its own percentage of fault, which makes identifying every responsible party early a practical necessity rather than a technicality. In a trucking case that can mean the driver, the motor carrier, the loading company, and the maintenance contractor.

Damages caps depend on the claim. Most ordinary Utah personal injury claims are not subject to a general cap on economic or noneconomic damages. Important exceptions include medical malpractice, where Utah Code § 78B-3-410 limits noneconomic damages, and governmental claims, where § 63G-7-604 provides limits on recoverable damages. The limits and exceptions depend on the type of claim.

Punitive damages are available but narrow. Utah Code § 78B-8-201 permits them where conduct was willful and malicious or showed knowing and reckless indifference. Drunk driving and trucking cases with falsified logs are where they realistically come into play.

What Your Utah Personal Injury Case Is Worth

Nobody can quote a number on day one, and any lawyer who does is guessing to win your signature. What we can do is show you the components.

Once your personal injuries clear the tort threshold, the injury claim adds up past and future medical treatment, lost income, reduced earning capacity, property damage, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and in the hardest cases loss of consortium for a spouse.

Three factors move the number more than anything else. The first is available coverage, because a catastrophic injury against a driver carrying Utah’s minimum liability limits has a ceiling no lawyer can raise, which is why underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy matters so much. The second is the completeness of your treatment record, since future care you never documented is future care no insurer pays for. The third is whether the firm across the table believes you will actually try the case.

Settling before you reach maximum medical improvement means guessing at your own future medical costs and eating the difference. We wait when waiting is worth money, and we move fast when the policy limits are low and the injuries are severe.

Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Every case is different.

How We Build Winning Personal Injury Cases

Every case is different. Here are six ways we work to protect your claim, with services tailored to your circumstances.

01.

For trucking cases, Ron reads the trucking records himself

He went to commercial driving school and holds a CDL so he would not have to take a motor carrier’s word for anything. Hours-of-service logs, ELD data, weight distribution, pre-trip inspection reports. The driver’s story gets tested against the paperwork within days.

02.

Early scene investigations for semi-truck cases

In semi-truck cases, we can send private investigators to the scene to document evidence and look for nearby surveillance footage before it is lost. The investigation depends on the circumstances of the crash.

03.

We help you get into a rental car*

Losing your only vehicle turns a bad week into an impossible one. We help eligible clients explore rental-car options as early as possible.

*Rental-car assistance is available if eligible and depends on coverage, fault, and your circumstances.

04.

We file your PIP household services paperwork

Up to $20 a day so a family member can be paid to help around the house while you recover, separate from your settlement.

05.

Calls every two weeks during active treatment

Clients in active treatment receive calls from their paralegal every two weeks as our standard. Outside active treatment, we check in monthly, with more frequent contact when your case needs it. You should never have to chase us for an update.

06.

We push the case instead of parking it

Files stall because nobody is moving them. We prepare early, pull deadlines forward, and get you your check as soon as the case resolves.

What the timeline actually looks like

Phase Typical timeframe What happens
Investigation Days 1 to 30 Scene documentation, witness statements, records requests, PIP opened
Treatment 1 to 12 months You focus on medical care while we monitor bills and liens
Demand After maximum medical improvement We package medicals, wage loss, and future care into a demand
Negotiation 30 to 90 days Adjuster response, counters, mediation where it makes sense
Litigation Only when warranted Complaint filed in the appropriate Utah district court, discovery, trial

Soft tissue claims with clean liability often resolve in six to twelve months. Surgical cases and contested liability cases run eighteen months to three years. A personal injury case that goes to verdict takes longer than a personal injury case that settles, and sometimes it is worth every month.

Utah personal injury attorney Ron Kramer

Why You Need a Utah Personal Injury Lawyer

Some personal injury claims do not need a lawyer. If your bumper has a scratch, you saw a chiropractor for six weeks with a soft tissue diagnosis, your bills landed between $3,000 and $5,000, and nothing is permanent, you can settle that yourself. Utahns do it every day, and we will tell you so during the free consultation.

The gap widens fast past that point. Four reasons a Utah personal injury attorney changes the outcome on anything larger:

Insurers price unrepresented claims differently

An adjuster handling a file with no attorney on it knows the claim will never see a courtroom. The offer reflects that.

Utah's threshold and fault rules are technical

Clearing § 31A-22-309, documenting permanent impairment with objective findings, and defending against a comparative fault argument under § 78B-5-818 are not tasks a claims form walks you through.

Medical liens eat settlements quietly

Health insurers, Medicaid, Medicare, and treating providers all assert claims against your recovery. Reducing those liens is often worth more to the client than the last few thousand dollars of negotiation with the carrier.

Trial capacity changes the math

Ron went through the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in 2013 and tries cases when the offer is too low. A firm that has never tried a case has one move, and the defense knows it.

Meet Ron Kramer

Ron Kramer founded Kramer Injury Law in 2004 and has represented injured people since 1997. He is licensed in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada.

B.A., International Relations, Brigham Young University, 1992
J.D., University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, 1996
Holds a Commercial Driver’s License
Chair, Education Committee, Utah Association for Justice, 2010
Excellence in Education award, Utah Association for Justice, 2012
Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College, 2013

A California native, Ron came to Utah for college, went home for law school, then moved his family back because this is where he wanted to raise his kids. He has six of them. On weekends you will find him on a mountain bike.

In his own words, getting clients the medical treatment they need is the satisfying part, and doing good in the community comes right behind it. That work includes an annual toy drive putting $1,000 of toys in the hands of children in the local Hispanic community.

Our Guarantees to Every Client

Six words that get used loosely in legal advertising. Here is what each one means at this law firm.

You pay nothing unless we win

No retainer, no hourly billing, no invoice arriving while you are out of work. Our fee comes out of a settlement or a trial verdict, and only then. We advance the cost of filing fees, records, and experts so your case keeps moving.

First consultation is free

Not a fifteen-minute screening call. A real conversation about what happened, what your claim is likely worth, and whether you need a lawyer at all. Sometimes the honest answer is that you can handle it yourself, and we will tell you that.

Someone answers, day or night

Call 24/7 to speak to a member of our team. Our intake team is available day and night, including weekends, to complete your intake and help you sign up as a client. You can get started even after the office has closed.

We come to you

If a hospital bed or an immobilizer keeps you from driving to Redwood Road, we drive to you. Home visits and hospital room visits, anywhere in the valley.

We are built to try cases

Ron went through the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College and takes cases to verdict when the offer is too low. Insurers track which firms actually file and which ones always settle, and they price offers accordingly.

Where We Practice

Most people who find us are searching for a Salt Lake County personal injury lawyer, and our Redwood Road office in West Jordan sits at the center of that map, minutes from Jordan Landing, the Bangerter Highway interchange, and the Mountain View Corridor. We take cases arising anywhere in Utah and we drive to clients who cannot drive to us.

Salt Lake County
We also represent clients across the Wasatch Front and southern Utah, including Ogden, Layton, Bountiful, Lehi, Orem, Provo, Logan, and St. George.

Licensed in three states

Utah is home, and most of our work happens here. Ron is also admitted in Nevada and Idaho, which matters more often than people expect. Utah drivers get hurt on I-15 south of Mesquite and on I-84 north of Snowville, and a Utah resident injured out of state usually has a claim governed by that state’s law. We handle those cases directly instead of referring them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Utah personal injury lawyer cost?

Nothing upfront and nothing hourly. We work on contingency, meaning we take a percentage of the recovery. No recovery means no fee and no bill for case expenses.

Is there a difference between a personal injury lawyer and a personal injury attorney in Utah?

No. The two words mean the same thing here. Anyone practicing as a personal injury attorney in Utah has to be an active, licensed member of the Utah State Bar, and you can verify any lawyer’s standing through the Bar’s online directory before you sign anything. What actually separates firms is trial history, staffing, and whether they handle your case type every week or once a year.

How long do I have to file an injury claim in Utah?

Four years for most personal injury claims under Utah Code § 78B-2-307, two years for wrongful death, and two years for medical malpractice or product liability from the date of discovery. If a government entity was involved, you have one year to serve a written notice of claim. That last one ends more cases than any other deadline on the list.

Do I have to use my own insurance if the crash was not my fault?

Yes. Utah is a no-fault state, so your own PIP coverage pays your first medical bills and part of your lost wages regardless of fault. Using it does not raise your rates, and Utah law prohibits an insurer from charging you more for accessing PIP.

What if the crash was partly my fault?

You can still recover as long as you are less than 50 percent responsible. Your award drops by your share. Do not assume you are at fault because an adjuster told you so on the phone.

What is my personal injury case worth?

It depends on your injuries, the available coverage, and how well your treatment is documented. When injuries are severe and the policy limits are low, carriers sometimes tender the limits within weeks. When limits are high, we wait until your treatment picture is complete, because settling before you know your future medical costs means paying those costs yourself.

Can I borrow against my case?

Lawyers cannot loan money to clients under Utah’s ethics rules. Third-party advance companies will, and they charge for it. A $1,500 advance has typically cost around $2,100 to repay within six months. Cheaper than a payday lender, still expensive. Talk to us before you sign anything.

Can I switch lawyers?

Yes. You have the right to change lawyers, and signing a retainer does not mean you are locked in. If you have concerns about how your case is being handled, Kramer Injury Law offers a free second opinion so you can understand your options and decide what is right for you. We can explain how a change would affect your case, any existing fee obligations, and the steps needed to transfer representation.

Do you handle cases outside Salt Lake County?

Yes. We take injury cases across Utah, and Ron is also licensed in Nevada and Idaho.
